Functional Principle: Open Circuit Cooling Towers

Open circuit cooling towers bring cold, dry air into contact with hot water from industrial processes or air conditioning systems. Part of the water evaporates and cools the remaining water. The required evaporation heat is approximately 597 kcal. The cooled water is then returned to the process and the cycle begins again. Evaporative cooling towers (wet cooling) are very energy efficient and play a significant role in industrial processes and air conditioning.

The difference between the required cold water temperature and the wet bulb temperature (known as the cooling range), determines the size of the cooling tower. The smaller the difference, or the smaller the cooling range, the more exchange surface area is needed. The cooling range should be at least 3-4 °C.

In open circuit evaporative cooling towers (open cooling towers), there is direct contact between the air and water, which is enhanced by the installed fill media with large exchange surfaces. Depending on the water quality, film fill or splash fill is used.
