Double-tube safety heat exchangers play an important role in applications where there is a need to prevent mixing of the heat exchange media due to leakage. Twin tube safety heat exchangers have established themselves as a standard and are valued in the chemical, power, heavy and light industry, oil and gas, marine, transport and refrigeration sectors, and food and beverage industries. function and design

Unlike normal tube bundle heat exchangers with a single tube design, the tubes of a double tube safety heat exchanger have a double tube wall consisting of an inner and an outer tube. In addition, there are two tube sheets on each side. If a tube is damaged, the medium flows through the leakage channels between the double tubes into the leakage space between the two tube sheets and triggers an alarm in the leakage sensor. Since the second tube wall is undamaged, the two media remain separate. A contamination of the processes and the associated equipment is thus prevented and the plant operator can keep the heat exchanger in operation until the next maintenance. An expensive, unplanned downtime is thus avoided.

 

More safety with double tubes

Double-pipe safety heat exchangers are available in different materials and material combinations, depending on the application and the media used. The inner tube is usually smooth, while the outer tube has a serrated profile on the inside. On the one hand, this ensures the metallic contact between the two tubes in order to generate an optimal heat transfer. On the other hand, the profile creates fine leakage channels between the two tubes. Depending on the application and the different media properties, the outer surface of the outer tube can be smooth or ribbed.
