The ammonia dryer removes water from the refrigerant circuit while the system is in operation. It keeps the refrigerant circuit dry and clean and ensures efficient operation of the refrigeration system.

The function of the GEA Ammonia Dryer

The ammonia dryer heats the wet ammonia and boils the ammonia out of the water. An electric or hot gas heater can be used for this. The distilled ammonia flows out of the dryer and is returned to the oil separator. After the completion of a cycle, the controller initiates the next filling and distillation process. The cycle is only ended and the manual drain valve opened when the water concentration in the tank sump reaches the defined value. The residues, which may contain sludge in addition to the aqueous ammonia solution, are fed into the prepared canister and disposed of. The signal lights on the control panel provide information about the respective operating status of the dryer.

The effect of water in the refrigerant cycle

Despite regular maintenance, a refrigeration system can have a water content of approx. 2% to 5% within a few years. Due to the different evaporation temperatures of water and ammonia, even very low water concentrations can increase the evaporation temperature of the ammonia-water mixture. If the suction pressure changes the evaporation temperature of the aqueous ammonia solution, the intended temperature in the cooling chambers can no longer be reached. This effect is compensated for by lowering the suction pressure, which simultaneously reduces the performance of the compressor. In order to continue to guarantee the specified cooling capacity, the operating hours of the compressor must be increased, which increases the operating costs of the refrigeration systems. In addition, the water in the ammonia cycle promotes corrosion, causes the oil to age more quickly and accelerates the formation of sludge in the refrigeration system.
