Carry out maintenance and repair work on ammonia refrigeration plants with legal certainty

In practice, in particular, simple maintenance work is often performed by in-house personnel. These include activities such as drawing oil onto the compressors or ammonia into the system but also manual venting or de-oiling.

All these activities are an intervention in the refrigeration cycle. A discharge of ammonia is therefore not safe to exclude. The TRAS 110 (Technical Rules for Plant Safety - Stand 01/2015) stipulate that such activities may only be carried out by at least 2 experts certified according to DIN EN 13313 due to their hazardous nature. The theoretical part of the expertise can be obtained and confirmed by participation in training courses by recognized bodies.

Employees working as lateral entrants to an ammonia refrigeration system can benefit from the introduction of refrigeration technology by participating in a basic course.

Subsequently, the acquired knowledge can be deepened and extended through further training. This training is also suitable for skilled refrigeration plant builders, who previously dealt with HFC refrigeration systems and will now work with ammonia refrigeration systems.

Finally, it is possible for the lateral entrants to obtain proof of competence by participating in a written exam. Participation is, of course, also open to refrigeration plant manufacturers, but is not absolutely necessary as they are already certified on the basis of their vocational training, even if they do not have knowledge of ammonia refrigeration systems.

Substantial expertise is demanded by the legislator to ensure the safety of the system, the protection of the environment and the employees.
